Online dating has become one of the Internet's most popular topics, and many have tried it. You've heard some advantages, and maybe a few disadvantages. Online dating advice has come at you from every direction, even though you are not yet involved. You have thought about online dating, but is it as great as some people say it is?
You might want to give online dating a try if:
- you live in a small town with few possible partners
- you have (unsuccessfully) dated all possible partners in your area
- you are too busy to go looking for dates
- you are shy about asking for a date
- you don't like the rejection of being turned down
- you like the idea of someone else doing the groundwork
Online dating has possibilities if you follow the right online dating advice.

Maybe you're thinking of placing an ad: "woman seeking men for long term dating online at a love service". Perhaps your ad would read: "man seeking women for long term dating online at a free service". Or maybe you are just curious about online dating.

Online dating can be safe or risky. Much of what it is depends on your personal sensibility and responsibility. If you are irresponsible in your use of it, however, online dating can be as dangerous as a 3 AM walk down a dark alley in the seediest part of a large city.
Risks of Online Dating
1. Misrepresentation
Things are not always as they seem. That's the first thing to remember when thinking about online dating safety. The person writing to you may be 12 years old or 52 years old. Either may claim to be 25 years old. You have no way of verifying absolutely that people are representing the truth of who and what they are.
2. Availability of Information
The information you submit about yourself is available to a wide range of individuals, both honest and dishonest. Online dating safety can readily be compromised by making information too available.
3. Initial meeting
Some online dating experiences will result in face-to-face meetings. The initial meeting, if not properly set up and guarded, can result in tragedy rather than online dating safety.
4. Unplanned Meetings
Online dating safety is often surrendered by sharing, or making it possible for others to find, your physical address. You could find yourself meeting someone you did not want to meet.
